How to Choose a Dog Bed: Size, Support and Easy Cleaning
Find the right dog bed size, shape and washable cover for your dog's sleeping habits, mobility and everyday routine.
The prettiest dog bed in the shop is not always the one your dog will use. Some dogs curl into a tight circle. Others stretch across the floor like a rug. A bed that looks generous online can be much smaller once the bolster and padding take up space.
Start with your dog's sleeping position, usable space and cleaning routine rather than the color.
Measure the way your dog actually sleeps

Watch your dog during a relaxed nap. Does it curl up, stretch on its side or lean against a cushion? Measure roughly from nose to the base of the tail when lying comfortably and compare that with the bed's internal sleeping surface.
Raised sides make a cozy edge for some dogs but reduce usable space. If your dog likes to stretch, a simple mattress-style bed may offer more room. Check product measurements instead of relying on labels such as “large breed” or “medium dog.”
Compare the main shapes
Flat mats and mattresses: easy for many dogs to step onto, especially those who prefer an open surface. Look for padding that does not collapse in the middle.
Bolster beds: offer a place to rest the head, although the raised edge can make entry harder for dogs with mobility problems.
Donut-style beds: appealing to some dogs that curl up, but high, soft edges are not automatically suitable for an older animal.
Elevated beds: may be useful in certain conditions, yet check height, stability, mesh tension and whether your dog can step on and off safely.

Check the cleaning instructions before buying
A removable, machine-washable cover is practical only if you can actually get it back onto the insert. Examine the zipper construction and instructions for the foam itself.
Can you wash the cover separately? Is the lining water resistant or absorbent? Will the fabric tolerate your usual cleaning method? A bed that needs specialist care may be inconvenient for a muddy dog.

Support versus softness

A bed should offer a comfortable place to lie down without being so unstable that your dog struggles to rise. Claims such as “orthopedic,” “memory foam” or “joint relief” do not prove a bed will treat pain.
If your dog has arthritis, injuries or difficulty getting comfortable, ask a veterinarian what support and entry height are appropriate. Do not substitute furniture claims for medical advice.

Where to place the bed

Start in a place where your dog already chooses to rest: near the family rather than in a high-traffic doorway. Avoid blocking exits or heating equipment. A quiet resting corner is more useful than a fashionable location beside a noisy appliance.
Some dogs appreciate having more than one resting spot: a cooler one during the day and a warmer one at night. Protect against drafts and extreme temperatures.
Buying checklist
- Measure the usable lying area, not just the outer width.
- Choose an entry height your dog manages comfortably.
- Check whether the base slips on your floor.
- Review foam, cover and washing instructions.
- Look for exposed seams or detachable parts a chewer might swallow.
- Compare replacement cover availability and long-term care effort.
Is a bigger bed always better?
Not necessarily. A bigger surface is helpful for stretching, but shape, stability and your dog's resting preferences matter just as much.
How often should I replace a bed?
There is no universal schedule. Replace damaged filling, broken seams, unsafe exposed components and bedding that cannot be cleaned adequately.
Should a puppy use a different bed?
Consider safe materials, washability and whether the puppy chews or destroys bedding. Supervise new items and remove anything with swallowable stuffing.
